Biography

Lieutenant Colonel Jay Ireland graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2004 and was commissioned an Armor officer. He served as a Tank Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and Battalion Logistics Officer in the Black Jack Brigade in 2005, first in 1-8 Cavalry and then in 1-5 Cavalry. LTC Ireland deployed with the Black Knights to Baghdad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Upon completion of the Captain’s Career Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, LTC Ireland served in 3-61 Cavalry Squadron in Fort Carson, Colorado, eventually taking command of Annihilator Troop. From Fort Carson, LTC Ireland would deploy his troop in 2009 to Nuristan and Kunar, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Following the completion of his Troop Command, LTC Ireland was accepted to teach at West Point and attended graduate school for Geography at the University of Hawaii.

After teaching cadets at West Point and completing the resident Command and Staff General College, LTC Ireland served in the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss with 1-67 AR as the Battalion Executive Officer. He deployed to Kuwait with the Death Dealers in 2016 in support of Operation Spartan Shield. While on this deployment, LTC Ireland left Kuwait to advise the 9th Iraqi Army in their assault into Mosul to destroy ISIS in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. Upon return to Fort Bliss, LTC Ireland transitioned to the 3ABCT Executive Officer and then as the Secretary of the General Staff for the commander of the 1st Armored Division.

LTC Ireland was nominated and served in a Joint Assignment at the United States Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany. In that assignment, LTC Ireland was a branch chief for East Africa overseeing DOD operations in Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda

LTC Ireland then served as the 1-8 CAV Battalion Commander and the 1st Cavalry Division G3, Chief of Operations.

LTC Ireland has been married to Courtney Ireland since December of 2005.
