Mark Sander
Biography
LTC Mark Sander is a National Security Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. He is a native of Pittsburgh, PA. He entered active service in the Army Medical Service Corps with a Reserve Officer Training Corps commission at the rank of Second Lieutenant in 2005. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Crime, Law and Justice, from the Pennsylvania State University and holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh.
His military education includes attendance at the Command and General Staff Officer Course, Army Medical Department Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Health Service Materiel Officer Course and has received several technical certifications in Healthcare Executive Leadership, Joint Logistics, Support Operations, Intermediate Systems Acquisition, Defense Support to Civil Authorities, Strategic Studies, Joint Humanitarian Operations and Joint Planning.
LTC Sander served in diverse roles to include Medical Platoon Leader, 2nd Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment; Aide de Camp for the Deputy Commanding General, North Atlantic Regional Medical Command and later Deputy Surgeon General for Warrior Care and Transition; Health Service Support Officer and later S-4, Logistics Officer, 325th Brigade Support Battalion; G4 Medical Logistics Officer, 18th Medical Command; Commander, 551st Medical Logistics Company; Chief of Materiel Management and Accountable Officer and later, Deputy Commander for Operations of the United States Army Medical Materiel Center-Korea; Chief of Medical Logistics for U.S. Army Pacific; and Deputy G4, 18th Medical Command. He most recently commanded the United States Army Medical Materiel Center - Korea from June 2022 until June 2024.
LTC Sander has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from December 2005 to February 2007 and again from October 2008 to October 2009; and Operation Enduring Freedom from October 2013 to July 2014.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (two oak leaf clusters), Meritorious Service Medal (three oak leaf clusters), Army Commendation Medal (two oak leaf clusters), Army Achievement Medal (one oak leaf cluster), Meritorious Unit Citation, Navy Unit Citation, Army Superior Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Iraqi Campaign Medal (three campaign stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, and the Expert Field Medical Badge. He is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit, the Ordinance Order of Samuel Sharpe, is an honorary member of the Korean Military Medical Association, and is the recipient of the University of Pittsburgh, Margie Jonnet Award for outstanding community and military service.
