Mick Mulroy is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) for the Middle East. He is a retired CIA Paramilitary Operations Officer from the Special Activities Center and a retired United States Marine. He is currently the President of Fogbow LLC, is a Distinguished Military Fellow for the Middle East Institute, an ABC News National Security and Defense Analyst, an advisor for the Center for New American Security, and the Co-Founder of the Lobo Institute.
As the DASD, Mick was responsible for the Department of Defense (DoD) Middle East policy and representing the DoD in U.S. national security policy with the National Security Council and the inter-agency. He was responsible for 15 countries. Mick helped develop the 2017 U.S. National Security Strategy, the 2018 National Defense Strategy, and the Irregular Warfare Annex. He is a recipient of the Secretary of Defense Award for Outstanding Public Service.
At the CIA, Mick was Chief of Department in the Special Activities Center (SAC), Chief of Station, Chief of Expeditionary Team in a warzone country, Chief of Base in a warzone, Deputy Chief of a Branch in SAC, and a PMOO in a Branch in SAC. His CIA awards include the Intelligence Star, the Intelligence Commendation Medal, the Career Intelligence Medal, and the National Intelligence Exceptional Achievement Medal, among others. He is also a recipient of the State Department’s Superior Honor Award.
In the U.S. military, Mick was both an enlisted and commissioned Marine. His military awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Global War of Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal, among others.
As a Co-founder of the Lobo Institute, Mick co-led several national security and humanitarian projects, including advising Martin Griffiths, the then-UN Special Envoy. to Yemen, advising the U.S. State Department on a program in Afghanistan, post-withdrawal, and assisting in the drafting of national level policy and strategy, specifically in the area of irregular warfare.
As the President of Fogbow, Mick oversaw humanitarian efforts in Gaza including maritime aid delivery, and building humanitarian infrastructure to store critical humanitarian aid for the UN and charitable organizations, and in Sudan where the Fogbow team delivered food aid via air drops to a population of civilians cut off from ground delivery.
Mick is on the Board of Advisors of several academic and non-profit organizations. These include Sound Off, FamilUSA, Third Option Foundation, Grassroots Reconciliation Group, and the Co-President of End Child Soldiering, a 501(C)(3) dedicated to ending the use of children as armed combatants and rehabilitating those who were child soldiers.
He has a bachelor’s degree from Augusta University and a law degree from Samford University.
