Our Mission
The Intelligence Project seeks to build a new generation of intelligence practitioners prepared to serve in a rapidly changing world and to help future policymakers and intelligence consumers understand how best to interact with intelligence to gain a decision advantage. Building on multi-disciplinary research at the Belfer Center, from history to geopolitics to emerging technologies, the Intelligence Project links intelligence agencies with Belfer researchers, Faculty, and Kennedy School students, to enrich their education and support public policy decision-making.
Program Activities
Our four main programming pillars:
-
The Recanati-Kaplan Foundation Fellows Program educates the next generation of thought leaders in national and international intelligence and supports their research to develop policy-relevant knowledge for the most pressing security issues. Since 2012, the Belfer Center has hosted intelligence officers from the US and foreign intelligence services for a full academic year of study at Harvard University. Application is through direct invitation to participating services, and applicants are nominated by their organizations. Recanati-Kaplan Fellows develop a course of study and a research focus that suits their needs and meets the fellowship’s main goals of learning the tools of applied history, strengthening their skills and knowledge base, and preparing for senior leadership roles in the future.
-
We host regular events with an array of guest speakers, including former and current government professionals and experts from academia and think tanks, who explore pressing topics relating to the history, current practice, and future priorities of intelligence. These events take place in person, and occasionally online, during the Fall and Spring academic semesters. See all our events here.
-
Intelligence Project fellows and staff publish in a variety of outlets to contribute to our understanding of intelligence practice, intelligence history, and how intelligence professionals are tackling top security and geopolitical priorities. See more of our research and insights here.
-
We engage students across the Harvard community through events, our Intelligence Study Group, a popular non-credit seminar each semester, and QLab, a new national security innovation accelerator at HKS.
You can find more information on the Intelligence Study Group here.
