To celebrate its 25th anniversary this academic year, the Belfer Center’s Project on Managing the Atom (MTA) will host a conference in the spring of 2022. The event will feature a number of panels and keynotes addressing major issues in nuclear proliferation, energy, and security. Highlighting the impact of the MTA community on the nuclear field, the conference will bring together prominent scholars and practitioners to discuss how the field has changed as well as where it may go. Date and details will be publicized in the spring semester.
In January, MTA scholars will attend the tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT RevCon) taking place from 4 to 22 January at UN Headquarters in New York. Delegates from hundreds of nations will review the landmark 1968 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and discuss further action. MTA will hold a side-session showcasing its ongoing “Atomic Backfires” project, which examines some of the most common foreign policy tools for addressing nuclear dangers in order to highlight costs and consequences inherent to nuclear policymaking.
In addition to the 25th anniversary event and the NPT RevCon, MTA will continue its regular seminar series, its Iran Working Group, and its involvement with initiatives on nuclear energy, safety, and security in the Gulf region.
