Abstract
The usefulness of offense-defense theory is the subject of our correspondence section. In separate letters James Davis, Jr., of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Bernard Finel of Georgetown University, and Stacie Goddard of Columbia University challenge arguments made in two articles in the Spring 1998 issue of this journal. Stephen Van Evera of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Charles Glaser of the University of Chicago, and Chaim Kaufmann of Lehigh University address their critics.
