THE CONCEPT OF A GLOBAL COALITON AGAINST CATASTROHIC TERRORISM IS LAUNCHED

PDP PRINCIPAL VISITS NUNN-LUGAR SITES IN RUSSIA

MOSCOW -- Memorial Day 2002 represents the tenth anniversary of a trip to the former Soviet Union led by Senators Sam Nunn and Dick Lugar, which launched the Nunn-Lugar program. PDP principals Ash Carter and Bill Perry joined them on that first trip. Last week, Nunn and Lugar led another trip and Carter joined them again. The trip began with a conference sponsored by the Nuclear Threat Initiative with the collaboration of the Preventive Defense Project. The conference called for a U.S. led Global Coalition Against Catastrophic Terrorism. After the conference, Carter accompanied Nunn and Lugar on visits to sites throughout Russia at which the Nunn-Lugar program is eliminating nuclear, biological, chemical, and ballistic missile weapons. Attending were Senators Bob Graham, Pete Domenici, Barbara Mikulski, and Jeff Bingaman; and Representatives Chris Shays and John Spratt, together with U.S. and Russian Federation officials and experts on nuclear and biological weapons.
