A report published early in 1994 by the National Research Council, Women Scientists and Engineers Employed in Industry, is subtitled Why so Few? After spending a day with several women professors of engineering and listening to the obstacles that they have had to surmount at each step of the perilous way to a successful career in engineering, the question might be better phrased: How Come So Many? What has made it possible for even a handful of women to succeed despite the impediment?
