Battle re-enactments are for the romantically inclined. When the Battle of Naseby (1645) is staged by the Sealed Knot society it is a family fun weekend complete with Roundheads, Cavaliers and the blank-firing “Sweaty Betty” cannon.
Every April, when the inhabitants of Lexington, Massachusetts, recreate the battle fought there in 1775 between revolutionary “patriots” and British Army regulars, there is a party atmosphere with minutemen and redcoats sipping lattes together after the shooting stops. Even the Waterloo re-enactment that I once attended was more like an al fresco fancy dress party.
