Geopolitics and Governance in the 21st Century: the View From Iraq

Harvard Faculty, Fellows, Staff, and Students

This study group, hosted by MEI Senior Fellow and Former President of Iraq Dr. Barham Salih, explores the significance of geopolitics and history in shaping contemporary Iraq. It examines the struggle to build a modern democratic Iraqi state amidst religious, sectarian, and ethnic divides. We will discuss i.a. the dynamics of Kurdish nationalism, extremism and terrorism, environmental challenges, and regional economic integration.

A major focus will be the impact of foreign powers like US policy, including security and military dynamics, as well as the emerging Chinese influence on Iraq’s development. How do major and ‘middle’ powers compete for regional influence amidst a fracturing global order? By the end of the study group, participants will have a deeper understanding of the history of state-building in the Middle East, its successes and limitations, and the opportunities and challenges that policymakers wrestle with today.

Date & Location:
The seminar will span 6 weekly sessions on Wednesday afternoons from 4:30pm – 5:45pm on 18 September and throughout the month of October (2, 9, 16, 23, 30 October). Sessions will take place at HKS room L-324 (Fainsod, 3rd floor off the Forum). Refreshments will be provided.
