1. A NET SECURITY ANALYSIS: WOULD SPACE-BASED WEAPONS ENHANCE US NATIONAL SECURITY? 2. A PRESCRIPTION: HOW THE US CAN ACHIEVE SPACE SECURITY
This presentation will overview the results of a forthcoming two-paper series analyzing space-based weapons. The first paper develops a criteria for how to judge whether a space-based weapon is a net advantage and then looks at each of the four different space-based weapons systems that have been seriously proposed and conducts a first order analysis of whether each is likely to lead to a net increase or decrease in U.S. national security.
The second paper discusses a robust alternative path which deals with the key ways to (1) address the genuine vulnerabilities that the United States faces for its space assets (and achieve "space security") and (2) obtain the other capabilities which drive some to consider space-based weapons, via alternative means that do not lead to adverse consequences for U.S. security.
