But is that skepticism warranted?  From his perch on the Pacific rim, Dr. Bates Gill is tracking the debate about America's current and future presence in the region, while following Washington's policies of economic, diplomatic, and military engagement with partners in Asia.

Skeptics continue to question the Obama administration's signature foreign-policy initiative, the "rebalance" to Asia. But is that skepticism warranted? From his perch on the Pacific rim, Dr. Gill is tracking the debate about America's current and future presence in the region, while following Washington's policies of economic, diplomatic, and military engagement with partners in Asia. He is also trying to think through some of the strategic trends which will probably shape U.S. influence and interests in the region long after the Obama administration leaves office. From this perspective, Dr. Gill argues for taking a closer, less dismissive look at America's future in the region and seeing how an already robust U.S. presence will likely grow stronger over time.
