Russia’s preparation for malicious cyber activities began long before the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. In fact, one could argue that preparations and operations have been executing for more than a decade. 

Please join the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program for an AI Cyber Lunch Seminar featuring Melissa Hathaway, President of Hathaway Global Strategies and former Senior Advisor to the Belfer Center's Cyber Project. In a talk entitled "Malicious Cyber Activities: Russia-Ukraine and the Surrounding Territories," Hathaway will discuss how Russia has honed its precision operations through a sophisticated execution and conquer of targets and access.

Q&A to follow. Buffet-style lunch will be served.

Each year the Belfer Center's Arctic Initiative sends a delegation of students to attend the world’s largest Arctic gathering, the Arctic Circle Assembly. This year, after a competitive application process, four students were selected to represent Harvard at the Arctic Innovation Lab. Come and hear their presentations before they leave for Iceland to pitch their ideas for a changing Arctic.

The event will focus on creating fairer data markets, exploring new business and governance models to harness personal and non-personal data, and enabling competitive forms of governance to benefit the needs of local businesses and people in all countries regardless of their level of development.

Mr. Saxton will elaborate on the mission of AFRICOM, which entails coordinating the kind of support that will enable African governments and existing regional organizations to have greater capacity to provide security and respond in times of need. Mr. Saxton will discuss the interplay between security and development in Africa and how a new model for civil-military cooperation can contribute to both.

The lecture explores the role of universities in Africa's development. It seeks to explore new avenues for promoting Africa-U.S. university cooperation, especially in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

In July 2009, Seacom, a Mauritius-based firm, launched its $700 million undersea fiber optic cable connecting eastern Africa to the rest of the world with high-speed, low-cost Internet. Based off field observations, this talk explores the economic and policy implications of what is probably the most important infrastructure investment in eastern Africa since the construction of colonial railways.
