Deterrence in the 21st Century: U.S. Choices on the Roles of Nuclear Weapons, Conventional Capabilities, and Missile Defense
On October 11, 2010, Project on Managing the Atom/International Security Program Research Fellow Tom Nichols addressed the Polish Institute of International Affairs on "Deterrence in the 21st Century: U.S. Choices on the Roles of Nuclear Weapons, Conventional Capabilities, and Missile Defense," in Warsaw, Poland. Nichols discussed the problem of tactical nuclear weapons and the future of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Central Europe with Polish experts from the Institute. Nichols proposed that nuclear weapons should be removed from Europe and that NATO needs to consider how to achieve its eventual transition from a Cold War alliance to pan-Atlantic collective security organization.
The Polish Institute of International Affairs was established in 1996 by the Polish parliament to conduct research and provide expertise in international affairs to both the public and to the Polish government.
