Abstract
Technoservice is a new model of production. It involves more value-added products and automated production technology. Therefore, it is necessary that managers have the ability to change to preserve the competitive strength of US industry. Management must fit the mode of work that is most productive, given the fact that management that is effective in one environment may not be so in another. For example, an effective research management style is not the same as an effective mass production management style. Technology is transforming the mass production industry into an environment of technoservice work. The role of management is no longer that of monitoring. Instead, management must add value as trainers or facilitators of teams that share tasks and information. The change is taking place in both service and manufacturing facilities. Research managers must acknowledge that in the technoservice world, technology must be designed as a tool for workers who in turn are responsible for product quality and consumer satisfaction.
