Abstract

What motivates a person to remain in a remote urban settlement often subject to severe weather conditions? This study sheds light on the state of academic research on migration and place bonding in the Russian Arctic Zone, providing some illustrative examples from the Norwegian, Finnish, and Swedish parts of the Arctic for comparative purposes. Additionally, this study examines whether and in which forms the topic of human–place bonding is present in scholarly discussions of migration to and from the urban Arctic. This study’s outcomes are relevant to broader research questions concerning the trajectories for cities in the Russian Arctic Zone and other parts of the Arctic to evolve into multicultural and inclusive communities.
