Project on Grid Integration

The rapid construction of data centers for artificial intelligence (AI) is contributing to growing energy demand and an increased need for grid, energy, and transmission development across the United States. The future of data centers and their energy needs—as well as the policy choices made in this realm—will shape both the U.S. energy system and American technological competitiveness for decades to come. The Project on Grid Integration leverages expertise across Harvard Kennedy School and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) to develop new policy, technical, and operational tools that leverage the data center boom in order to strengthen and modernize the U.S. electric grid, while minimizing the economic, social, and environmental repercussions of rapid data center expansion.

Workstreams & Goals

The Compute, Energy, and Geopolitics project will pursue four work-streams over an initial two-year period. The project aims to:

1. Establish and disseminate foundational knowledge of the relevant facts, trends, and projections across each issue area.
2. Critically examine policy questions at the nexus of data, energy, and geopolitics in order to uncover courses of action, compare trade-offs, and outline national and international implications.
