Justin Barnes is a Predoctoral Research Fellow at the Belfer Center's Arctic Initiative and a PhD candidate at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. Barnes is also a Research Fellow at the North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network (NAADSN) and Canada Fellow at Polar Research and Policy Initiative (PRPI). Barnes is a Managing Editor at the Arctic Yearbook (arcticyearbook.com), an annual interdisciplinary peer-reviewed volume focused on Arctic politics, governance, and security.

Barnes' research has been related to the intersections between climate change adaptation, community resilience, and security in the Arctic. While completing his Master’s degree in 2019, Barnes pursued an internship at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) in the Division for Sustainable Development Goals at UN Headquarters. Barnes' current PhD research is focused on the influence of non-state actors in circumpolar governance. Barnes is a member of the Canadian Olympic Team and represented Canada at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
